The smallest of the four friends decides to take a different approach to catching the bird and is successful by exercising patience and kindness.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

This book is interactive and provides many opportunities for using actions (paddling, climbing) and fun sound effects and exclamations (shh, GO!, splash). There are many simple phrases repeated throughout the book that children will become familiar with and be able to say on their own!

READING TIPS:

  • You know the drill… pause and let your child try to finish the repetitive phrases
  • Read the book in a whisper and build suspense - this is sure to get your child engaged!

Trashy Town

SUMMARY:

This story is all about a community trash man cleaning up his town with a smile on his face.

WHY WE LOVE IT:

We love the simple plot of a trash man cleaning up his community with a smile on his face. The repeatable, rhythmic refrain on every other page will have your child wanting to read this book over and over. Less common vocabulary words (empty, smash, dump…) are featured and can be explained through the illustration and context. Make sure to find the two little grey mice hiding on each page!

READING TIPS:

  • As your child becomes more familiar with the book, you may be able to ask prediction questions like what’s the last thing Mr. Gilly will get clean? Where is he going now? Is it full yet?

Don’t Wake the Dragon

SUMMARY:

This story takes place in a rowdy castle that makes it close to impossible to not wake the sleeping dragon. You and your child will be instructed to help keep the dragon asleep throughout the book. A guaranteed hit with your toddler!

WHY WE LOVE IT:

By around 3 years of age, most children can follow simple two-step instructions. The interactive nature of this book is sure to keep your child engaged and motivated to complete the instructions to keep the dragon sleeping. This story is a great introduction to inference, which is an important skill for reading and becoming a master problem solver!

READING TIPS:

  • Take advantage of the numerous sound effects and actions present in this book. Your engagement will increase your child’s interest/attention, therefore, lead to more language development!
  • Once your child becomes more familiar with the book, remember to pause and see if your child will initiate the action or sound on their own (tapping on the drum, rocking the book back and forth, etc).
  • Kid can’t sit still? Stand up and incorporate some gross motor skills!
